Zyad holds a Master’s in Science and Executive Engineering from MINES ParisTech and a Master’s in Supply Chain Management from MIT. He is a current grad student at MIT studying system design and management (SDM), a joint degree from the MIT Sloan School of Management and the MIT School of Engineering that focuses on effective leadership and problems solving in product design, development and innovation. Zyad is a Legatum Center and MasterCard Foundation fellow.
Zyad’s venture Coabga offers a distribution channel from Moroccan artisans to consumer markets in the United States and establishes a quality brand for authentic handcrafts. The venture’s platform is a website that displays crafts and allows consumers and wholesalers to place orders directly with artisans. Zyad’s long-term goal is to scale the platform and offer the wares of artisans in other African countries, connecting rural artisans and international markets, and bringing technology to rural communities.
While climbing the Atlas Mountains and exploring the desert, Zyad met Moroccan craftsmen creating beautiful caftans, silver jewelery, and ceramics. Despite their talent, Moroccan craftsmen have limited access to markets. Zyad believes that a web-based distribution channel helps artisans access markets and receive recognition for their work, as well as command higher prices for their crafts.
After completing his undergraduate studies, Zyad discovered his passion for entrepreneurship and created an e-commerce start-up called Mycoupons.ma. Previously, he worked as a financial engineer in the London-based investment bank Société Générale CIB, and served as an advisor to the Moroccan Ministry of Handicraft and Social Solidarity Economy.
